This is fantastic. I was just talking with a homie the other day about how “aura” is just fans having a crush on their favorite basketball players, but I love how you went more in-depth. Going to be thinking about this one for a while!
This is crazy, definitely one of the best things I have read this month!!! I feel like the concept of aura has taken the world by storm and I cannot seeing it everywhere, either in NBA twitter or underground rap pages, I keep discussing with my friends about its meaning and purpose, who believe is just another buzzword created by internet brainrot, but at the same time I also believe it goes deeper than that. Your essay really goes a long way trying to go further with it, the obsesiveness behind the use is stuff that I had not thinked about before, and it really is a fundamental part of it bc to understand aura you really have to be enganging in online discourse that 99% of people do not engage with, in other words, you have to be a bit chronically online to understand it. At the same time though, I am sure we will see in the recent future an increase in this term being used, written about, and thoroughly discussed, I also like to think there is a bit of Walter Benjamin´s conceptualization of aura in our nowadays understanding of it. I dont think the increasing popularity of this term is a coincidence considering how Gen Z craves and celebrate authentic and distinctive things in order to also identify with them and be part of that distinctiveness. but idk, thats just me i guess.
This was great and it will definitely keep me up at night thinking about it for a few days!

Excellent article. Prolly the best nba writing I’ve come across this year. Keep it up
Another amazing piece, Ock.
I'd add that effortlessness is another indispensable ingredient of aura.
